Chávez supporters mark 14 years since final election victory in Caracas

Dozens of supporters of former Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez marched through Caracas on Wednesday to commemorate the 14th anniversary of his final presidential election victory on October 7, 2012.

Organised by the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), the demonstration saw participants carrying photographs and placards of Chávez along Avenida Universidad despite heavy rain.

“I am celebrating because Chávez was a very good, humble man and he deserves it,” demonstrator Fidelina Rivero said. “If Chávez got wet, I am getting wet too.”

Supporters also recalled Chávez's final campaign rally on October 4, 2012, when crowds filled seven avenues in Caracas as he delivered a speech during heavy rainfall.

Demonstrator Carlos Castillo praised the former leader and called for the release of Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, who are detained in the United States.
