Panama’s Mulino says earthquake impact is significant nationwide
Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino said the impact of Friday’s magnitude 7.5 earthquake was significant nationwide as his government coordinated assistance and assessed damage across the country.
Mulino visited affected areas and said authorities were working to assist damaged hospitals, health centres and other sites. “We are coordinating everything, but yes, the impact is significant nationwide,” he said, adding that no fatalities had been confirmed at the time of his remarks.
The earthquake damaged buildings, churches and roads in several provinces, including Coclé, Herrera, Los Santos and Veraguas. In Penonomé, images showed homes collapsed onto vehicles, while a church in Coclé lost one of its towers and a historic government building suffered serious structural damage. A tsunami warning was later lifted, while authorities continued monitoring aftershocks and urged residents to avoid damaged structures.
